Maspalomas lighthouse (Faro de Maspalomas) on Gran Canaria's southern side is the beginning of the most visited beach strip in all of Europe. The resort of Maspalomas is a seaside resort with fine hotels, luxury villas and the largest golf course on the island. Between the golf course and Playa del Inglés lies a large area of dunes (400 hectares) which became the national park in 1994. You can only reach the dunes on foot or on camel. In addition to all the classy hotels, there are a large number of quiet bungalow areas that are perfect for families with children and for those who want peace and quiet. From most bongalow areas it is a bit to walk to the beach but there are free buses that run regularly and stop near the lighthouse. In the area around the lighthouse there are plenty of restaurants and shops. There are many attractions and fun things to do in the surrounding area and a few kilometers outside Maspalomas there are parks such as Aqualand Maspalomas, (the island's largest water park), Holiday World (a large amusement park), Palmitos Park (bird park with aquarium, butterfly house and orchids), Sioux City (theme park, wild west). Adjacent to Maspalomas, beyond the lighthouse, lies Meloneras. Everything breathes luxury here and it is trendy and well-visited. In Meloneras there are design shops and jewelery shops. A first class pleasure for those who want to shop and also to eat well. There are shopping malls, restaurants, cafes and bars along the entire boardwalk.
You can travel to Gran Canaria with a charter company. Either a complete trip with accommodation or an air chair and then book accommodation separately. It is also possible to fly scheduled flights. From the airport you take bus, taxi or rental car.
It is 33 km highway to Maspalomas from the airport.
Markets On Fridays at 9-14 there is a market in Puerto de Mogan. There, leather goods, scarves, bags, hats and African crafts are sold and much more. In Las Palmas there is a market every Sunday between 09.00-14.00 in Parque Blanco Wine tasting The Canary wines are of good quality although they are quite unknown outside the island. Some wineries welcome visitors for tastings, purchases and information. Mocanal, near the Bandama Crater and Tabaibilla on the road to Fataga are two good vineyards. Nature and the mountains Nature and the mountains are the real sights of Gran Canaria. Rent a car and drive the road from Maspalomas (GC 60) up to Fataga and on to Tejeda. A distance of 50km which takes about 1.5 hours to drive without stopping. The nature experience is fantastic with all the mountains and deep valleys. Highly recommended. Otherwise there are plenty of excursions and activities to choose from. There are trails in all difficulty levels for both hiking and cycling. Check for brochures and books at the tourist offices. .
